Introduction

Purpose of the Job

The Road Worker will perform a variety of tasks to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable upkeep of roads and related facilities. This includes routine maintenance, repair works, and construction activities, contributing directly to the improvement of transport infrastructure.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following entry-level criteria to be considered:

  • Education: NQF Level 1 (Grade 9) or higher; alternatively, ABET Level 2 Certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Communication: Basic communication and interpersonal skills to effectively work within a team and interact with the public.
  • Teamwork: Ability to collaborate and assist colleagues in achieving project goals.
  • Accuracy: Strong attention to detail in carrying out instructions and ensuring high-quality work.
  • Computer Literacy: Basic computer literacy is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Planning and Organisational Skills: Ability to prioritise tasks, follow instructions, and complete assigned duties efficiently.
  • Physical Fitness: Good health and physical strength to undertake labour-intensive tasks such as lifting, digging, and prolonged outdoor work.

Key Responsibilities

As part of the Road Maintenance and Construction team, successful candidates will:

1. Road Construction and Maintenance

  • Participate in the building of culverts, side drains, and gabions to ensure effective drainage and structural stability.
  • Carry out earthworks and road layer works, including excavation, levelling, and compaction.
  • Assist in road surfacing, pothole patching, and sealing activities to maintain road safety and durability.

2. Road Safety and Signage

  • Install and maintain steel guardrails, barricades, and distance markers along roads.
  • Erect, repair, and repaint road signs, markings, and studs to ensure compliance with safety standards and improve driver visibility.
  • Support the setup of temporary signage and barricades for work zones, ensuring road users are protected.

3. Cleaning and General Upkeep

  • Perform cleaning duties on roads, sidewalks, and resting areas to maintain a neat and safe environment.
  • Conduct brush clearing, grass cutting, and vegetation control along road verges.
  • Assist with fencing repairs to secure roadside areas and protect infrastructure.

4. Equipment and Material Handling

  • Safely use and maintain basic hand tools, power tools, and equipment required for road maintenance.
  • Load, transport, and offload construction materials and tools at designated work sites.
  • Report damaged tools or unsafe equipment to supervisors for replacement or repair.

5. Health, Safety, and Compliance

  • Comply with all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, ensuring personal and team safety on-site.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Report hazards, incidents, or unsafe practices immediately to supervisors.
  • Follow Departmental policies, procedures, and instructions without deviation.
