About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and safety-conscious Shunter to join our operations team in Secunda. The Shunter plays a critical role in organising and safely manoeuvring trains from the exchange yard to designated loading and off-loading points across various business units.

This role is hands-on, operational, and essential to ensuring efficient rail movement, compliance with safety standards, and accurate coordination of rolling stock and commodities.


Key Responsibilities

As a Shunter, your core duties will include but not be limited to:

Rail Movement & Safety

  • Adhere to all principles of safe rail movement and Sasol’s operational standards.
  • Apply basic health, safety, and environmental (HSE) knowledge to daily duties.
  • Ensure compliance with all plant-specific rules and safety procedures.

Operational Functions

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the site layout and apply correct shunting procedures.
  • Correctly display and interpret hand signals during rail operations.
  • Operate railway vehicles, lines, and hand points safely.
  • Conduct air brake and vacuum tests in compliance with regulations.
  • Perform inspections of loads to verify safety, compliance, and readiness.

Equipment & Communication

  • Operate handbrakes and test two-way radio communication systems.
  • Accurately perform coupling and uncoupling of vehicles.
  • Identify different rolling stock types using profile codes.
  • Recognise commodity types through symbolic signs, data sheets, and colour coding.

Planning & Execution

  • Formulate the train profile based on operational requirements.
  • Execute train movements in accordance with the designated plan, ensuring adherence to operational timelines.
  • Read, understand, and apply special notices related to rail operations.

Minimum Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • Education: Grade 12 / High School Diploma (or equivalent).
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ relevant rail or logistics operations experience.
  • Licenses: Valid driver’s license (advantageous).

  • Railway Systems Knowledge – Proficiency in shunting procedures, hand signals, and rail equipment use.
  • Logistics Analysis – Ability to monitor, record, and report on operational performance.
