Main Purpose of the Job
To attend to emergency medical calls and provide intermediate life support (ILS) care in line with professional scope of practice, regulatory guidelines, and ER24 standards. This role is pivotal in ensuring effective patient management, operational readiness, and upholding ER24’s reputation as a trusted emergency medical service provider.
Key Responsibilities
1. Emergency Medical Response
- Respond to emergency calls efficiently and within the required time frames.
- Deliver patient care in line with Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) / ILS scope of practice.
- Perform clinical interventions such as airway management, cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, administration of medication, and trauma care.
- Accurately complete Patient Report Forms (PRFs) and maintain compliance with HPCSA documentation standards.
2. Operational Readiness & Compliance
- Ensure that all equipment, vehicles, and medical consumables are operational and ready for emergency deployment.
- Conduct daily inspections of ambulances and report any faults or shortages immediately.
- Adhere to HPCSA guidelines, ER24 protocols, and Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs).
- Comply with all regulatory and health & safety requirements, including infection control and safe driving practices.
3. Patient Care & Clinical Excellence
- Provide evidence-based emergency medical care with professionalism and compassion.
- Stabilise patients and ensure safe transport to healthcare facilities.
- Engage with hospital staff to ensure smooth patient handovers.
- Apply best practice principles in emergency medicine to support positive patient outcomes.
4. Communication & Public Relations
- Market and maintain a positive public image for ER24 by engaging with communities, patients, and stakeholders in a professional manner.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills, ensuring clear, concise, and respectful interactions with patients, families, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
5. Continuous Development & Teamwork
- Participate in training sessions, simulations, and refresher courses to maintain competency.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the EMS team to ensure high standards of care.
- Assist with mentoring and supporting junior staff or students when required.
Minimum Education & Training
- Essential:
- Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) Certificate or Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care.
- Desired:
- Completion of Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) training published by the HPCSA.
- If not compliant with CPG training at the time of application, candidates must complete this during the probation period upon successful appointment.
Experience Requirements
- Essential Minimum:
- At least 1 year EMS experience at an operational level.
- Desired:
- 1 year Intermediate Life Support (ILS) experience.
Knowledge & Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of HPCSA guidelines and professional scope of practice.
- Application of best practice principles in emergency medicine.
- Strong knowledge of demographical areas, travel routes, and facilities relevant to operational deployment.
- Accurate completion of Patient Report Forms (PRFs) and other compliance documentation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic IT literacy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English (fluency in additional South African languages will be an advantage).
- Strong situational awareness, quick decision-making, and problem-solving ability.
