Purpose of the Role
An exciting opportunity exists within the Tailings Division for a reliable, safety-conscious, and motivated Tailings Operator. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring that all planned operational targets are met on schedule, to the highest quality standards, and in compliance with contractual, environmental, and safety obligations.
This position requires hands-on experience in a mining or construction environment, with a strong focus on operational precision, teamwork, and adherence to safety regulations. The Tailings Operator will support the supervisor in managing daily site operations, pipeline management, and tailings deposition to ensure optimal site performance and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Performance
- Collaborate closely with the immediate supervisor to achieve operational and production targets as outlined in the daily and weekly work plans.
- Execute operational tasks in line with company procedures and client specifications to ensure continuous and efficient tailings deposition.
- Monitor tailings flow, slurry density, and deposition patterns to ensure optimal material management and dam stability.
- Extend, connect, and reposition pipelines as required to facilitate efficient tailings distribution and deposition processes.
- Operate valves, pumps, and other relevant equipment in accordance with operational requirements and safety protocols.
- Conduct routine inspections and monitoring of designated areas to identify potential hazards or deviations in process flow.
2. Site Inspections and Maintenance
- Carry out daily inspections within the assigned operational zone, noting and reporting any irregularities or safety concerns to the supervisor.
- Maintain operational areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition at all times to support efficiency and reduce downtime.
- Assist in pipeline maintenance, cleaning, and leak management to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations.
- Support the maintenance team in performing basic equipment checks and minor repairs as directed.
3. Tailings Management and Dam Operations
- Plan, control, and manage tailings material at the site and depositing areas according to operational procedures and environmental requirements.
- Perform Mud Guard duties, including monitoring and regulating tailings dam levels, water recovery systems, and embankment conditions.
- Maintain the structural integrity of the dam by preventing overflow, seepage, or erosion.
- Ensure adherence to operational and environmental safety guidelines while handling tailings materials and equipment.
4. Health, Safety, and Compliance
- Comply with all company and client Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures.
- Participate actively in daily toolbox talks, safety meetings, and ongoing risk awareness programs.
- Report all safety incidents, near misses, and potential hazards immediately to the supervisor.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently as per site requirements.
- Contribute to the overall culture of safety by demonstrating vigilance and accountability in all work activities.
5. Communication and Team Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to coordinate daily operations and resolve issues efficiently.
- Follow instructions promptly and seek clarification where necessary to ensure tasks are completed accurately.
- Support colleagues and foster teamwork to maintain high morale and operational continuity.
- Demonstrate respect, reliability, and commitment to professional conduct at all times.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Grade 12 Certificate (Matric) or equivalent qualification is required.
- Additional training in tailings management, construction operations, or safety procedures will be advantageous.
Experience
- A minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience in a mining or construction environment.
- Experience in tailings or slurry pumping operations will be advantageous.
- Familiarity with pipeline systems, valve operations, and site inspections is desirable.
Technical Skills and Knowledge
- Understanding of tailings management processes, material handling, and slurry operations.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to identify operational or mechanical faults.
- Awareness of safety standards, environmental compliance, and emergency procedures.
- Ability to operate valves, pumps, and small tools safely and efficiently.
- Knowledge of site communication protocols and standard operating procedures.

General Requirements
- Must successfully complete company and/or client background checks and criminal screening.
- Must be medically fit, physically and mentally capable of performing operational duties in line with company and client standards.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts (day/night) as scheduled.
- Availability for overtime or weekend work when necessary to meet project deadlines or respond to operational needs.
- Must adhere strictly to the company’s code of conduct, professional behavior standards, and confidentiality requirements.
Working Conditions
The role will be based on an operational tailings site within an international project location. Work conditions include exposure to outdoor weather elements, slurry material, and operational machinery. Full compliance with safety and environmental standards is mandatory.
The successful candidate will work as part of a diverse and experienced operational team, reporting directly to the Tailings Supervisor, and contributing to the safe, effective management of tailings storage facilities.
