Introduction

South African National Parks (SANParks) is responsible for managing South Africa’s protected natural heritage, including renowned conservation areas and National Parks. In support of its environmental preservation mandate and in alignment with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), SANParks invites applications from suitable candidates for the position of Environmental Monitor at Groenkloof National Park.

This opportunity aims to provide meaningful work experience, promote skills development, and support local employment while contributing to the cleanliness, safety, and proper functioning of park facilities. Purpose of the Position

The main purpose of this role is to ensure that indoor and outdoor facilities are kept clean, functional, hygienic, and visitor-friendly. The Environmental Monitor will also assist with stock control, support daily operational functions, adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards, and help maintain a safe and positive environment for staff, guests, and visitors.

The position forms an important link between park hygiene, visitor experience, and environmental care principles. Dedicated and responsible individuals will thrive in this role, gaining valuable experience in facility management, cleaning operations, and environmental monitoring.


Key Responsibilities

1. Cleaning and Hygiene Maintenance

  • Perform daily cleaning of offices, boardrooms, ablutions, hallways, reception areas, and open areas.
  • Ensure that cleaning tasks are conducted according to hygienic standards and workplace protocols.
  • Sweep, mop, dust, wash, sanitize, polish, and maintain clean work surfaces and floors.
  • Clean windows, doors, walls, corridors, and furniture as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness of meeting and common-use spaces, ensuring they remain welcoming and presentable.

2. Waste Management and Environmental Care

  • Empty and clean waste bins throughout the facility.
  • Safely transport collected waste to designated disposal areas in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Support recycling initiatives, including sorting and preparing recyclable materials.
  • Report environmental hazards, spills, or maintenance issues to supervisors promptly.

3. Facility Support and General Assistance

  • Prepare boardrooms for meetings, including arranging seating and refreshments.
  • Assist with lost and found items according to official procedures.
  • Support stock receiving and issuing activities to ensure accurate supply control.
  • Participate in periodic stock-taking to track inventory levels of consumables such as soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and cleaning agents.

4. Safety and Compliance

  • Work in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Apply safe handling practices when working with cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Follow emergency procedures and assist in emergency responses if required.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings, training sessions, and safety briefings.

5. Additional Operational Duties

  • Perform duties in accordance with supervisor instructions.
  • Provide relief and support in various areas when required.
  • Assist with other ad-hoc tasks that contribute to the functional efficiency of the facility.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
