Purpose of the Job

The Mining Operator plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth functioning of Sasol’s mining operations. This position involves operating mining-related machinery and equipment within designed parameters to optimize performance, reduce waste, and minimize operating costs. The role requires strict adherence to safety standards and a proactive approach to maintaining equipment reliability and plant sustainability.


Minimum Requirements

  • Education:
    • Completed Matric / Grade 12 / N3 or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience:
    • Underground mining experience will be an advantage.
  • Location:
    • Sasolburg and Secunda.

Key Responsibilities

As a Mining Operator, you will be responsible for a wide range of operational and safety-related tasks, including:

1. Safety Compliance

  • Apply and maintain safety standards in all work activities.
  • Participate in toolbox talks and safety meetings to promote a safe working environment.
  • Adhere to SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) policies, procedures, and standards at all times.

2. Operational Duties

  • Operate mining machinery and equipment according to design specifications and operational guidelines.
  • Perform plant inspections and repairs to ensure equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Identify faults using appropriate diagnostic methods to maintain equipment availability and efficiency.

3. Planning & Reporting

  • Execute tasks according to daily work plans and schedules.
  • Provide accurate feedback to supervisors and customers on work progress and any issues encountered.
  • Capture correct history feedback to support renewals, upgrades, and critical spare replacements.

4. Continuous Improvement

  • Spot and report opportunities for improvement in work processes and equipment performance.
  • Participate in PDAs (Planned Data Analysis) and RCAs (Root Cause Analysis) to enhance plant safety and stability.

5. Housekeeping & Waste Management

  • Maintain good housekeeping practices in all work areas.
  • Adhere to waste disposal procedures to support environmental sustainability.

6. Training & Development

  • Attend training courses and seminars as per the training matrix to improve skills and competency.
  • Identify personal development needs and incorporate them into a Personal Development Plan (PDP) with group leader approval.
