About the Role

The Department of Health is seeking dedicated and reliable individuals to join the Human Nutrition Directorate as Food Service Aids. This role is essential for ensuring the safe preparation, distribution, and serving of meals to patients in accordance with hospital standards and hygiene protocols. Successful candidates will work in a dynamic environment, supporting the hospital’s nutrition services and contributing to patient care.


Minimum Requirements

  • Educational Qualification:
    • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Experience:
    • No experience required.
    • Added Advantage: Previous experience in food preparation and diet knowledge in hospitals.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Basic understanding of food service procedures and hygiene standards.
  • Knowledge of Batho Pele principles and customer care.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Ability to organize and perform routine tasks.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, in a team, and during shifts/public holidays.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Undergo orientation training in the cook-freeze meal system and adapted conventional cooking methods.
  • Pack frozen plated meals and distribute food in crates to designated areas.
  • Assist with pre-preparation and cooking of meals, salads, and snacks in the Main Kitchen, Diet Kitchen, and Tube Feed area.
  • Prepare soups, porridges, and reconstitute frozen meals as required.
  • Set up trolleys in ward kitchens and assist with serving food and beverages to patients.
  • Collect trolleys and dishes from wards and wash dishes after meal service.
  • Collect fresh cooked meals from the Main Kitchen and ensure timely delivery.
  • Operate food service equipment and perform routine cleaning tasks.
  • Lift heavy food baskets and push trolleys safely.
  • Take responsibility for food supplies and report any waste or losses.
  • Apply hygiene and safety measures according to the hospital’s Hygiene and Safety Manual and work schedules.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, managers, patients, and hospital staff.
  • Be prepared to relieve in all areas of the food service unit when required.
  • Participate in continuous training and development programs and performance evaluations.

Salary & Benefits

  • Annual package: R138,486 per annum.
