Purpose of the Role
The Assistant General Worker is responsible for providing general site support, operational assistance, housekeeping, and safety compliance to ensure efficient and safe execution of mining operations.
This role supports site teams in achieving daily production targets while maintaining a clean, hazard‑free work environment in line with Fraser Alexander’s strict operational and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities

1. Operational Support
- Work closely with site supervisors, operators, and team members to support daily mining, tailings, or infrastructure activities.
- Assist with completing operational tasks that contribute to achieving production goals and contractual targets.
- Support technical staff and machine operators by providing manual labour where required.
- Help prepare work areas, move equipment, clear obstructions, and ensure readiness for operational tasks.
2. Daily Inspections of Work Areas
- Perform routine inspections of the assigned work area (tailings facility, plant area, pump stations, pipelines, earthworks sections).
- Identify hazards such as spillages, obstructions, or unsafe conditions.
- Report all deviations, potential risks, and irregularities immediately to the site supervisor.
- Ensure inspection findings are communicated timeously to maintain compliance.
3. Problem-Solving & Issue Escalations
- Assist team leaders in identifying operational challenges and help troubleshoot basic issues.
- Escalate unresolved or urgent problems to supervisors.
- Contribute ideas and suggestions for improving processes and preventing recurring operational issues.
4. General Site Activities
- Perform a variety of general labour tasks including digging, loading, moving materials, assisting with installations, erecting safety barricades, and supporting maintenance efforts.
- Help with pipe handling, pump preparation, drainage control, or tailings deposition work where required.
- Support teams during slurry operations, construction, and site preparation.
5. Housekeeping & Cleanliness
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
- Sweep work areas, remove debris, clean spillages, and keep tools properly stored.
- Help maintain site hygiene standards essential for efficient operations and risk reduction.
6. Adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Follow all instructions, procedures, and methods outlined in Fraser Alexander’s Standard Operating Procedures.
- Maintain compliance with environmental, operational, and safety guidelines.
- Participate in training to ensure understanding of SOPs and site-specific procedures.
7. Safety Compliance
- Follow all Fraser Alexander safety rules, protocols, and site regulations.
- Wear correct PPE at all times (helmets, gloves, reflective wear, boots, etc.).
- Report near misses, unsafe behaviour, incidents, and hazards.
- Avoid shortcuts that compromise safety and ensure safe working practices always.
Minimum Requirements
✔ Education
- Grade 12 / Matric OR equivalent
- Grade 10 accepted in some instances if combined with relevant experience
✔ Experience
- At least 1 year of relevant work experience, preferably in:
- Mining
- Construction
- Industrial general labour
- Tailings operations
- Experience in heavy-duty labour or outdoor fieldwork is advantageous.
