For the first time since 2015, the City of Tshwane has embarked on a large-scale recruitment initiative aimed at bolstering the capacity of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD). Who Can Apply? Criteria and Eligibility

The TMPD recruitment program is open to South African citizens aged 18 to 35 who meet the following requirements:

  • South African Citizenship & Local Residency: Applicants must be South African citizens and reside within the boundaries of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.
  • Education: A minimum of a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate is required.
  • Physical Fitness: All applicants must meet gender-specific fitness standards:
    • Men: Complete a 2.4 km run in under 11 minutes and an obstacle course within 3 minutes.
    • Women: Complete a 2.4 km run in under 14 minutes 29 seconds and an obstacle course within 4 minutes.
  • Driver’s License: A valid Code B (manual transmission) South African driver’s license is essential.
  • Clean Criminal Record: Applicants must not have any prior criminal convictions.
  • Medical Fitness: A certified medical report is required to confirm the applicant’s physical health and ability to perform policing duties.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is crucial.
  • Character Attributes: Candidates should be responsible, community-focused, disciplined, and willing to commit to the Oath of Office.

The Selection and Training Process: What to Expect

The recruitment journey is rigorous and designed to identify only the most dedicated and capable candidates. The selection process unfolds over several stages:

  1. Initial Application: Candidates submit their applications online, including a CV and supporting documentation.
  2. Fitness Assessment: Applicants must demonstrate physical readiness through endurance and obstacle course testing.
  3. Medical Examination: A health evaluation ensures all candidates are fit for duty.
  4. Language Proficiency Test: English communication skills are assessed.
  5. Background Check: This includes criminal screening and fingerprint verification.
  6. Personal Interview: Shortlisted candidates are interviewed to assess their motivation, ethical compass, and leadership potential.

Following successful completion of the selection phase, candidates undergo a 4-week pre-training selection course. Those who pass are offered an 18-month fixed-term trainee contract, during which they receive a monthly stipend of approximately R3,000.

Trainees then participate in a structured training curriculum covering:

  • Road policing and traffic law enforcement
  • By-law education and enforcement
  • Crime prevention tactics
  • Firearms handling and safety
  • First aid and emergency response
  • Community engagement and conflict resolution

Upon successful completion of the program, trainees become eligible for permanent placement as Metro Police Constables, with the possibility of being deployed in any of the 105 wards across Tshwane.
