General Requirements

Applicants must:

  1. Complete the form prescribed by the National Commissioner, affirming under oath or solemn declaration that all information is true and correct.
  2. Provide documentary proof of South African citizenship.
  3. Be aged between 18 and 35 on the closing date of the advertised application.
  4. Undergo a medical examination, as determined by the National Commissioner, and be found physically, medically, and mentally fit for duty.
  5. Pass a psychological integrity assessment aligned with the police official profile.
  6. Have at least a Grade 12 certificate (or equivalent), with supporting documentation.
  7. Be proficient in English and at least one other official language.
  8. Be willing to take the oath of office.
  9. Be prepared to undertake any training required by the National Commissioner.
  10. Have no visible tattoos when wearing any SAPS uniform.
  11. Be legally fit to possess a firearm.
  12. Have no prior criminal convictions or pending criminal matters.
  13. Not have been dismissed from previous employment for serious misconduct, including dishonesty, violence, sexual harassment, or drug-related offenses.
  14. Consent to provide a buccal sample and fingerprints for verification against criminal records.
  15. Agree to background checks and security vetting as required for clearance.
  16. Be willing to serve anywhere in South Africa.

Additional (Preferred) Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • A valid light motor vehicle driver’s license and one of the following:
    1. Relevant three‑year tertiary qualification (NQF Level 6 or higher) in fields like Criminal Law, Policing, or Forensic Investigation.
    2. Any other three‑year tertiary qualification at NQF Level 6 or higher.
    3. Grade 12 with entrance requirements for a bachelor’s degree.
    4. Grade 12 with entrance requirements for a diploma.
    5. Grade 12 with entrance requirements for a higher certificate.

Selection Process

  • All applicants will undergo fitness, psychometric, and medical evaluations, plus an interview.
  • Qualification, driver’s license (if applicable), citizenship, and residential address will be verified.
  • A vetting process will include security screening, reference and social media checks, and fingerprint verification for any illicit activity.
  • Applicants previously dismissed from government service for misconduct are ineligible.
  • Applicants with chronic health conditions or impairments that may interrupt training may be excluded or withdrawn if undisclosed.
