We are currently recruiting for the position of Inventory Controller to be based at our Springs site within the PPL Department. This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive and analytical professional to join a dynamic team and contribute to the efficient management of warehouse inventory in a fast-paced production and logistics environment.
Purpose of the Role
The Inventory Controller plays a key role in ensuring that inventory management practices are effective, accurate, and aligned with internal controls, audit requirements, and operational standards. This position supports business continuity by guaranteeing optimal stock levels, ensuring proper documentation of stock movements, minimizing losses, and enabling superior customer service performance.
As a critical member of the warehouse team, the Inventory Controller collaborates closely with the Planning, Production, Dispatch, Quality, and Sales teams to maintain integrity across the supply chain.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory Control & Stock Accuracy:
- Conduct daily cycle counts and monthly stock counts; create physical inventory documents and prepare system readiness for stock take procedures.
- Investigate stock variances using root cause analysis and compile variance commentary reports for management with trend insights.
- Monitor inventory write-offs, loss trends, and stock age reports.
- Manage and ensure correctness of all stock postings to appropriate accounts.
- Process stock adjustments prior to stock take and ensure all documentation is captured accurately.
Warehouse Operations & Compliance:
- Monitor stock rotation and implement the FIFO (First In, First Out) principle across warehouse operations using printed bin pulling sheets.
- Maintain correct stacking heights, optimize product storage locations based on ABC Analysis, and ensure warehouse housekeeping through regular floor walks.
- Apply quality control checks for incoming and outgoing stock, and ensure expired or non-conforming stock is isolated, blocked on SAP, and excluded from active orders.
- Support effective execution of product recall processes and maintain alignment with stock age policy, raising and approving necessary concessions.
Customer Service Enablement:
- Support internal and external customer satisfaction by ensuring timely availability of accurate stock (measured by On Time In Full – OTIF performance).
- Swiftly resolve customer complaints relating to inventory and delivery issues.
- Liaise with Sales and Depot teams on stock outs and highlight short-dated inventory to the Quality and Sales teams for proactive action.
System & Documentation Control:
- Start and end stock take in SAP and upload physical stock counts accurately.
- Generate stock variance reports and route settlement corrections to ensure system reconciliation.
- Ensure proper reconciliation of production bookings and that all post goods issues are completed daily.
- Clear SAP open cycles including shipments and transfer orders.
- Update and maintain accurate records on Key Performance Indicator (KPI) boards.
Logistics Coordination & Depot Support:
- Confirm inter-depot movements monthly and log claims in accordance with the organization’s claims procedures.
- Follow up on in-transit inter-depot shipments to ensure timely receipt.
- Investigate delivery discrepancies and charge depots, drivers, or third-party logistics (3PLs) for shortages or overages when appropriate.
Risk & Quality Management:
- Conduct risk audits at depots without site controllers and ensure quality control inspections are routinely conducted.
- Ensure the display of updated quality guidelines throughout the warehouse.
- Manage surveys and reporting on missing, broken, or foreign products; follow up with customers as necessary.
- Highlight high-risk incidents, including damage, theft, or quality-related losses, and ensure appropriate controls are enforced.
Team Leadership & Performance:
- Oversee performance of forklift drivers and ensure operational costs (e.g., cents per liter) are optimized through efficient asset utilization.
- Foster alignment with the company’s Vision, Mission, Values, and strategic goals among all team members.
- Promote a culture of excellence, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the warehouse.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification.
- NQF Level 6 qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field.
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a warehouse, logistics, or production environment.
- Sound knowledge of warehouse/production workflows and stock control procedures.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SAP (Stock Management Modules).
